5 Signs Your AC Is Headed For Trouble This Summer
August 18, 2023
Other than derailed vacation plans, the worst thing that can happen during the summer is for an AC to stop working in the middle of a heat wave. But as long as you look out for the following signs, you can typically avoid an AC emergency.
1. Short cycling
Short cycling is when an air conditioner starts up, runs very briefly, stops, and then starts up all over again. This requires significant energy and will quickly wear out the AC unit. If you notice frequent cycling but feel hardly any cooling, then give Hamilton Plumbing, Heating, A/C, Rooter a call at (913) 227-4943 and we’ll send a technician over to inspect your AC.
2. Inefficient cooling
An air conditioner is designed to cool your home. If it isn’t, then it’s not working properly. The cause could be leaking ductwork, malfunctioning compressor, poor insulation, problems with the thermostat, or poor maintenance.
3. Strange noises
It’s normal to hear the air conditioner turn on and off, but banging, whistling, scraping, grinding, and screeching noises are not normal. Ignore these sounds and you’ll risk dead silence in the middle of a hot day with sky-high temperatures. Strange noises could indicate compressor issues, a loose part, or problems with the ducts. The problem will get worse over time if not addressed as soon as possible.
4. Foul odors
Bad smells can be caused by excess humidity or moisture in the HVAC system. This could also lead to mold and mildew growth in the ductwork.
A burning smell could be caused by an overheating motor, a wiring issue, or another type of mechanical problem. A fishy or rotten egg smell, on the other hand, could be caused by melting plastic components. If you smell this, be sure to turn off the power to the circuits from the breaker box, evacuate the home, and contact the fire department right away.
5. Poor humidity control
A properly functioning air conditioner should be able to manage humidity levels in the home. If you notice the indoor air has become more humid than usual, call Hamilton Plumbing, Heating, A/C, Rooter at (913) 227-4943 to schedule a professional inspection and repair.
