Spooky Home Issues
August 21, 2023
There are many scary things in this world, but you shouldn’t be scared of what’s going on with your homes plumbing or HVAC system. You should be comfortable in your home at all times. So relax and learn how you can better your home.
Ghost Flushing
Ghost flushing is a scary but common household issue. You’re living your life, maybe watching TV, when out of nowhere the toilet flushes. There isn’t anyone using the bathroom, so why would it be flushing? It starts happening more often and you start to wonder if your home is haunted. The real issue, behind your ghostly toilet is that there’s a leak somewhere. “Ghost” flushing happens when a leak slowly lets water out of the tank, and causes the toilet to refill with water, by flushing itself. Most of the time when this issue happens you can replace the flapper in the toilet and you’re done. Ghost flushing wastes a lot of water and a lot of money. So if that doesn’t fix your haunted toilet, there may be a bigger issue at hand and you should have a professional take a look at it.
Stinky Sewer
Sometimes your home can have an odor so frightful that even the undead would turn their nose. You know the smell; that stinky smell that usually comes from a floor drain in the basement, a shower drain or maybe even a sink. A common reason for this smell to occur is a dry p-trap. A p-trap is the pipe under your sink or under a floor drain that is U-shaped. It holds water in the curve and that water works as a natural barrier from your pipes sewer gasses. When your p-trap is dry, those gasses can make their way into your home. Most of the time this happens to a drain that isn’t used very often. The water in the trap evaporated and you’re left with a haunting smell. The easiest fix is to routinely pour some water down the drain and refill the p-trap. If you try that and you’re still having that smell, there could be a blockage in your plumbing venting system, a crack on the pipe itself, or you could also have a loose toilet. If any of these are the issue, you may just want to have a professional take care of it because these are rooter issues that most people wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves.
Scary Furnace
Turning on your furnace for the first time can be a scary thing for some people, especially if their furnace is over ten years old, dirty, or hasn’t been well maintained. You should always get your furnace cleaned at least once a year to help keep your beast under control. Twice is recommended, once in the spring and once in the fall. Despite regular maintenance, sometimes a furnace cannot be tamed. Whether it stops working or is not blowing warm air, you should always have a certified tech look at your furnace when any issues arise. They will know what to do and have the tools on hand to get your furnace under control. If your furnace is older than 10 years, there may not be anything the tech can do that won’t cost you a lot of money. If that’s the case you may want to think about replacement. Once you start replacing parts, you start putting money into something that’s near its end of life instead of investing in something that will work properly and efficiently for years to come.
