The Top 5 Plumbing Problems At Home
August 23, 2023
There are a few common plumbing problems that can be easily resolved through DIY methods without having to schedule a professional plumbing service. The following issues are fairly common and don’t require extensive plumbing experience to handle.
1. Low water pressure
The bathroom or kitchen sink may develop low water pressure and barely release a trickle when the faucet is turned off. The first step is to check if both the hot and cold water is being affected by low water pressure. If yes, calcium deposits on the aerator may be the cause. Simply remove the aerator, clean it, and re-install it on the faucet.
2. Slow-draining sink
When the pop-up in the sink amasses hair and debris, it may be difficult for water to quickly drain from the sink. A Zip-it tool is a great option for removing hair, soap scum, and other debris. If you can, remove the pop-up and clean it. You’ll need to unscrew the nut holding the pop-up in place to remove it.
3. Slow-draining tub
Similar to a slow-draining sink, issues with slow drainage in a tub may be caused by buildup of hair, soap scum, and other debris. Use a Zip-it tool or needle nose pliers to reach down into the drain and remove the clog. Removing the tub stopper could be another way to reach the clog and remove it. Consider using a hair catcher to prevent hair and other debris from clogging the drain.
4. Running toilet
A running toilet may be caused by issues with the fill valve, toilet flapper, or flush valve. In these cases, you’ll need to repair or replace the faulty parts.
5. Jammed garbage disposal
The kitchen garbage disposal may become jammed with things like coffee grounds, vegetable peels, grease, soap scum, and egg shells. You’ll need to use an Allen wrench to free the motor and clear the garbage disposal. Or, use the key that comes with the garbage disposal by inserting it into the bottom of the disposal.
