Ways to Improve the Indoor Air Quality of Your Home
August 23, 2023
We don’t often think about air pollution as something that can affect us inside our homes, but it does exist, and it’s more common than you might think. We can get sick from things we can’t even see, from pet dander to carbon monoxide. Here a few ways to keep the air quality of your home healthy.
Improve Your Air Quality
A few small adjustments in your home can make a big difference in the quality of your air. This will be very important for those in the home with respiratory concerns, such as allergies or asthma.
Change Filters
Keeping the filters of your heating and air conditioner clean will make a big difference to the quality of your air. These filters trap all sorts of debris, and once they get full, they no longer work properly.
Keep The House Clean
Regular cleaning of the home helps to get out the dust and other particles that settle everywhere. Dusting, vacuuming and mopping will help to remove all those. And what better way to get your kids to do their chores than letting them know this is for their health!
Clean Ducts
Keep all the air ducts in the home clean. A lot of debris, hair and even mold can start to collect inside the ducts. Hire a professional to clean them annually so you know it will be done correctly.
Dehumidifier
A dehumidifier reduces the humidity inside the home. Mold and mildew thrive in humid conditions and can be particularly bad for people with asthma or allergies or other respiratory ailments. The more you run your dehumidifier, the less you’ll have to clean, as dust and other allergens won’t be as prevalent. Did you know that running your dehumidifier also helps your AC run more efficiently?
Air Purifier
A good air purifier will remove many contaminants from the air. Consider a UV light air purifier to help kill germs, viruses, mold, mildew and other allergens in the air.
UV lights work extremely effectively as a germicide in reducing the number of germs in the home. Germicidal UV lights are effective against viruses, bacteria, mold and mold spores, pollen, and dust mites.
UV lights have been used for decades in sterile environments like hospitals and now you can buy them for your home. The air passes over the light located in your ductwork system, where the high-output germicidal lamp instantly attacks the DNA of living viruses, bacteria, and other living airborne organisms so they can no longer reproduce and spread. The UV lights work for the entire house, keeping the air clean and healthy.
These lights eliminate germs in your home and inside your ventilation system. Another benefit of the UV light is it can also clean the air of unwanted odors like pet smells, cigarette smoke, stale air and the occasional burnt toast! Most often they are installed in the ductwork of your heating and air conditioning system, but some are freestanding.
Fresh Air
When possible, open up the doors and windows to let the fresh air flow through. It’s the natural remedy to remove stale air and odors from pets, cooking and dusty carpets or furniture.
No Smoking
Do not smoke inside your home; rather, dedicate an area outside. Second-hand smoke can be deadly and smoke and ashes settle on every surface. It gets in your hair and clothing and even in your bloodstream, even for those who don’t smoke themselves.
Clean Vents and Fans
Vents over the stove get full of grease and even small food particles. Cleaning them out regularly helps clean the air and allows them to function properly. Clean your fans, as well. If they are just coming back out of storage, they need to be cleaned before using them. Don’t forget to wipe down your ceiling fans!
House Plants
A few plants can absorb many toxins and pollutants from the air. They are Mother Nature’s natural air filters. They add a lovely touch to any room, as well. Some recommended plants for your home that will improve your air quality are snake plants, aloe vera, chrysanthemums, and daisies!
